CONJUNCTIONS
WHAT ARE CONJUNCTIONS?
A WORDS THAT ARE USED TO JOIN WORDS, GROUP OF WORDS OR SENTENCES ARE JOINING WORDS. WHEN WORDS ARE JOINING ON SPECIAL ACTION OR EVENTS AT THE SAME TIME CALLED CONJUNCTIONS. WHEN WE HAVE TO JOIN TWO WORDS OR TWO SENTENCES A WORDS IS USED TO JOIN THEM IS CALLED THE CONJUNCTIONS.
EXAMPLES: I AND MY FATHER BOTH ARE PLAYING FOOTBALL.
CHINKY LIKES SINGING BUT MINKY LIKES DANCING.
THE WORDS IS THE BOLD ARE CALLED CONJUNCTIONS.

- WE USED AND TO JOIN NOUNS OR PRONOUNS OR TWO SHORT SENTENCES. EXAMPLES:-
1) I BOUGHT CUPS AND SAUCERS.
2) SHEELA AND I STUDY IN THE SAME CLASS.
3) TOM IS JUMPING. MIRA IS SKIPPING.- TOM IS JUMPING AND MIRA IS SKIPPING.
WE USE ‘AND‘ TO MEAN ‘BOTH‘ OR WHEN THE MEANING HAS SOME RELATION.
- WE USE BUT TO JOIN CONTRASTING WORDS OR SENTENCES. EXAMPLE: –
1) FOOD WAS DELICIOUS BUT VERY EXPENSIVE.
2) RAMU IS POOR BUT AN HONEST MAN.
3) ASHOK IS TALL. HIS SISTER IS SHORT. – ASHOK IS TALL BUT HIS SISTER IS SHORT.
WE USE ‘BUT‘ TO SHOW CONTRAST.
- WE USE OR WHENEVER THERE IS A CHOICE OR AN ALTERNATIVE. EXAMPLE: –
1) WILL YOU HAVE COFFEE OR TEA?
2) RUDRA CAN GO BY BUS OR BY TRAIN.
3) WAS THE WOMAN YOUNG? WAS THE WOMAN OLD? – WAS THE WOMAN YOUNG OR OLD?
WE USE ‘ OR‘ TO MAKE A CHOICE OR SELECT AN OPTION.
- WE USE ‘BECAUSE’ WHEN THE SECOND PART OF A SENTENCE GIVES A REASON. EXAMPLE: –
1) ANITA WENT TO DELHI BECAUSE HER MOTHER WAS ILL.
2)SITA WAS ABSENT BECAUSE SHE HAD CHICKENPOX.
3) KAMALA COULD NOT DRINK TEA. IT WAS TOO HOT. – KAMALA COULD NOT DRINK TEA BECAUSE IT WAS TOO HOT.
WE USE ‘BECAUSE‘ TO GIVE A REASON OR ANSWER ‘WHY‘ QUESTIONS.
- ‘BOTH’ IS USED TO TALK ABOUT TWO PERSONS OR THINGS. EXAMPLE: –
BOTH MY BROTHER AND SISTER ARE TEACHERS.
- ‘SO‘ IS USED TO SHOW THE PURPOSE OF SOMETHING. EXAMPLE:-
I EXERCISED DAILY SO I LOST WEIGHT.
- ‘AS’ IS USED TO SHOW THE REASON. WHEN THE REASON IS MENTIONED FIRST, WE NEED TO BEGIN THE SENTENCE WITH AS.
I COULD NOT PLAY CRICKET AS IT WAS RAINING.
